In For a Penny, In For a Pound: The Management and Preservation of E-Theses in EPrints

The session will describe the current implementation of EPrints for the management and preservation of e-theses based on the requirements of both Library and Archives Canada (LAC/BAC} and local systems. The session will also include a description of the steps taken to insure that the e-theses will be accessible and usable in the future.

In Canada, universities have voluntarily submitted theses to Library and Archives Canada since the 1960s. As of 2014, LAC/BAC will only accept e-theses and uses OAI-PMH along with specific technical requirements to harvest e-theses from institutional repositories.

Additional developments at Memorial University include:

a. the migration of 6,000+ digitized analogue theses from CONTENTdm to EPrints, many of which include supplementary files.

b. the implementation of an e-thesis submission module for the Banner Student system which in turn transmits e-theses and associated metadata to EPrints.

c. the implementation of the SAFE-PLN private LOCKSS network with partners in Belgium and Germany as one component of an e-theses preservation strategy.

d. the development of support for the harvesting of EPrints metadata by the Summon discovery service and the transformation of EPrints metadata into MARC for input to the library catalogue.
