Aligning Regional Repository Networks

One of the major and favoured routes for providing OA is through repositories, and networks are being developed in a number of regions across the world. While there are unique requirements in each jurisdictional context and local infrastructures may differ, repository networks must be aligned across the world in order to support the truly global nature of research and scholarly communication. The real value of repositories lies in the potential to interconnect them to create a network of repositories, a network that can provide unified access to research outputs and be (re-) used by machines and researchers.

Through a number of strategic and pragmatic activities, COAR is already working on many aspects of alignment. COAR would like to expand these activities to include a greater number of organizations and regions. Based on this, COAR will be organizing a meeting in March 2014 to discuss the alignment of open access repository networks with senior representatives from repository networks from regions across the world.

This 24x7-presentation will articulate why repository networks should be aligned, how and on what levels this can be addressed, and outline outcomes of the March 2014 meeting.
