Item Description |
A selection of 47 plant listings (col. ill. with accompanying text) from the 208 listings (of wider variety) in the Theatrum sanitatis, ms. 4182 in the Biblioteca casanatense, Rome. The ms. is closely related in content to the group of mss. which have in common the title Tacuinum sanitatis. This ed. is selected and translated from the ed. published in 3 v., 1970-1971, by Franco Maria Ricci, Parma, Italy, under title: Theatrum sanitatis. "In this issue the text has been reduced and the illustrations have been given pride of place"--P. [7]. The text, or captions, here attributed to Ibn Buṭlān, are in fact translated partly from the Latin of ms. 4182 and partly from notes in other herbaria. Ibn Buṭlān, in his Taqwīm al-ṣiḥḥan, can only be regarded as the inspiration for this and other illustrated Tacuina. |
