E-resources: Academic online publications and databases

The National Library of Finland offers e-resources, such as e-books, e-journals and databases. Databases include bibliographies, reference databases and source materials.

The library acquires e-resources to support research and studies in the following fields: historical sciences, philosophy, Russian and East European studies, literary studies and music studies.

This page contains information on the use of e-resources and shortcuts to them.

How to find e-resources

E-resources are available through three tabs:

Remote access to e-resources

Remote access to open research publications does not require credentials or login

Some e-resources are open to everyone, and remote access to them does not require login. To distinguish open international research publications from resources requiring logging in with University of Helsinki credentials, look for the words Open Access in the link text.

Most articles in Finnish scholarly journals (Journal.fi) are open to everyone even if the words ‘Open Access’ do not appear in their link text. Some articles in Journal.fi journals are published openly after a delay of up to one year: you can see the date on which they will be available for open access in the ‘Access’ field of the record.

Remote access to some resources only with UH credentials

If the words ‘Open Access’ do not appear in the link text for an international resource, remote access to it requires logging in with University of Helsinki credentials. This applies particularly to databases. If you have already logged in to the search service with your University of Helsinki credentials, you will not be asked to do so again.

Alternatively, you can use resources with a VPN connection, in which case you will not be asked to enter your UH credentials. If using the OpenVPN service, please select uh-vpn-allroute as the connection. Further information on VPN connections is available on the website of the University’s IT Helpdesk.

If you do not have UH credentials, you can use these resources in the library facilities, either on a library terminal without logging in or on your own device by logging in to the HelsinkiUni Guest network (password: uniguest). Instructions for the HelsinkiUni Guest network can be found on the website of the University’s IT Helpdesk.

You can find more e-resources requiring UH credentials through the Helka library search.

Remote access to selected Fennica online resources

Some of the online resources included in the Finnish National Bibliography Fennica are openly available, that is, they can be used remotely without logging in. You can identify these from the link text Linkki verkkoaineistoon. For copyright reasons, Fennica resources received as legal deposits can be accessed only on designated legal deposit workstations. You can identify such resources from the Käytettävissä vapaakappalekirjastoissa link. If the record for an online resource does not have a link, it is usually an upcoming publication, and the link will be added later. Further information about the National Collection can be found in the Fennica online instructions.

General terms of use for licensed e-resources

These terms of use apply to e-resources requiring University of Helsinki credentials.

Users agree to follow the terms of use defined in the licence agreements on the e-resources. Violation of the terms may result in the termination of access to the resource in question. If necessary, please contact our customer service by email for further information: nationallibrary@helsinki.fi.
