AB - In this dissertation, I study intergroup beliefs about Muslims and Christians among Finnish youth with Muslim and Christian backgrounds. I aim to answer the following research question: What are the intergroup stereotypes and meta-stereotypes held by Finnish youth with Muslim and Christian backgrounds? In this article-based thesis, I draw the empirical findings from three originally published research articles. In these articles, I quantitatively and qualitatively analyse survey answers given by 19 respondents with a Muslim background and 167 respondents with a Christian background. The theoretical framework of the study principally consists of concepts, theories and research of intergroup beliefs: stereotypes and meta-stereotypes. A stereotype is an ingroup’s view of the outgroup and a meta-stereotype is the ingroup’s view of how they are seen from the perspective of the outgroup. The thesis supports previous theories on the aspects of intergroup beliefs. Stereotypes and meta-stereotypes consisted of explicit content, evaluative connotations and relational and hierarchical aspects. The last two provided a view of how groups position the ingroup and the outgroup in relation to each other and whether the outgroup is better or worse than the ingroup. AB - Tiivistelmä.
