AB  - The archaeological burial record of the Iron Age Southern Levant (ca. 1200-500 BCE) is incredibly diverse. It includes contexts that could be described – for example – as pits, cists, caves, chambers, dolmens, and tumuli. Yet archaeology’s approach to this data has often been very monotonic. Cultural history dominates readings about these contexts, and even though criticism about such top-down or text-inspired research has existed for some time, few have attempted to understand the Iron Age deceased as more than the sum of their material assemblages.
