The Lab is a research and experimentation hub at the law faculty that aims to develop the best practices for sustainable digitalisation. This volume contains two excellent LLM theses. LLM Hanna Pakaslahti's study on the costs of online dispute resolution processes provides a novel framework for assessing the cost-benefits of technology-enabled conflict management. She contests the assumption that ODR constitutes a cheaper and better resolution for e-commerce disputes then traditional courts. In turn, LLM Jenni Hakkarainen asks whether code could replace the function of law, using distributed block-chain technologies as an example. The study tests the limits of the (in)famous 'code is law' approach originally coined by Professor Lawrence Lessig. She argues that although some legal practices can be allocated to code, this does not remove the need for legal governance. Both Pakaslahti's and Hakkarainen's studies participate in the Legal Tech Lab's agenda of developing legal technology studies, a framework for assessing the intricate interplay between law, technology and society.
