Topics covered include: Aristotle's typology of constitutions and his theory of the rule of law, Roman concepts of law and jurisdiction, early Christian teaching on the role of civil authority and the subjection of human laws to natural law, the medieval development of a plurality of jurisdictions defined by law, practices of subsidiarity and federalism, the modern development of written constitutions and the separation of powers, and the emergence of judicial review as a means by which constitutional constraints on government are effectively enforced. The chapter closes by explaining the design and structure of the book and summarising summarizing the content of the specific chapters"--
